I had the incredible opportunity to travel to The Last Frontier, or as most know it, Alaska. In 1975, my sweet + young parents moved to a small town called, Sitka, and nearly 2 years later, I was born! They lived and worked on a fishing boat and attended the small (and only) college called Sheldon Jackson College. It was my first time back, since I was a mere toddler, and I have to say it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Sitka, Alaska, is an island community located between mountains and water. It is surrounded by rainforests, and has every sort of wildlife imaginable. From bears and eagle, to all of the five species of salmon! Wildlife, fishing and hiking are in abundance, everywhere you turn. If you are at all an outdoorsy person, Alaska is a MUST visit for you!

The St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral is located in the heart of Sitka. The church was built in approx. 1844 and was nearly destroyed in a fire. Many of the relics and religious pieces were saved and are now in the present church building. The cathedral is listed on the National Treasure of Historic Places. It has such a beautiful and timeless structure, and the bridge leading to the church, draws you in immediately.

As we ventured to the very top of Harbor Mountain, it felt like we were standing on top of the world. The paved and gravel road to the top winds through the mountains, until it reaches an elevation of 2000 feet. We literally experienced 360 degree views, and it was magnificent to say the least.

Sitka, Alaska’s 19th century nickname is the “Paris of the Pacific.” And for good reason! The views, activities and culture are second to none. It’s a must see.
